If you have to come from the Eastern Seaboard on public transit, one of the cheapest ways is to take a $40 Chinatown bus from NYC.
It leaves at 7 pm nightly from 59 Canal St, NY, NY. You have to pay in cash, and can buy your ticket starting at 5:30 pm on your day of departure. You will be dropped off around 4 am at a yellow Go Mart in Charleston, WV. It's located at 722 Bigley Ave.
Here are some notes I sent to friends about the bus: Use the restroom before Hagerstown, cuz you get transferred in to a van. If you plan on snoozing, set your alarm for 3:30 am cuz you've got to look sharp and make sure you don't miss your stop. It's at a GoMart Gas Station with a yellow color scheme, and you should get in around four. Ask the driver loudly and repetitively if you've arrived in Charleston.
